The Canteen - Joburgs backstreet cafe
Impressions
Canteen on Arts on Main is a great outdoor café and bar located in Maboneng area. It has a nice backstreet, industrial style and offers a relaxing atmosphere with its tables and benches beneath olive trees on a terrace right next to Arts on Main.
I can recommend this café for a lunch or breakfast break when you are visiting the Maboneng area. Although the quartier is usually quite well-frequented on the weekends the canteen has a nice tranquil surrounding.

Taste
As this place offers freshly roasted coffee the taste of the cappuccino was very good. The roastery is offering coffee from different, mainly African origins and is focusing on eco-friendly and fair trade growing processes.
Atmosphere
The outside nature of the café is a definite plus with the arts on main brick building next to it and beautiful olive trees offering some shade during hot days. There is also inside sitting places but I would recommend to sit outside if the weather permits. Also, there is often music playing during the weekend and a an inspiring vibe with many young people.
The service of the staff was only average in terms of friendliness.
Value
Not extremely cheap but ok given the location.
